![]() This game in my opinion easily could have been it's own standalone Silent Hill Story. The cynical part of me thinks Konami thought they could appeal to "OG Silent Hill Fans" who may have checked out from the series post Team Silent by having the game associated with the original. The characters share names and nothing else with the characters we know from SH1 so I don't get why it was done. I felt like every character in this game could have been renamed and the game would have been stronger as it's own unique self contained story without the baggage of associating it's story with Silent Hill 1. The one thing I kept thinking to myself throughout my play through was why Konami/Climax felt the need to make this a "Re-imagining" of Silent Hill 1. I really enjoyed the soundtrack from Origins so it stood out immediately for me. I also noticed that the track "Meltdown" from Silent Hill Origins is sampled in a track near the end of the game when Harry is approaching the Lakeside Amusement Park. It has a very unique sound and fits the childhood oriented themes and story of the game. The vocal credits track was great as always. This isn't a critique of the music itself which is fantastic as always but rather how it's used in the game. The implementation of the soundtrack actually reminded me a lot of Downpour where it almost blends into the background or is barely noticeable. I did however feel the soundtrack felt very reserved or under utilised compared to previous games. The soundtrack as always from Akira Yamaoka and Mary McGlynn was fantastic. I was quite satisfied with this ending and for me it felt like the most "Realistic" of all the endings available at least to me. I managed to get the "Broken"/"Love Lost" Ending. The Psychology aspect of this game I also really liked having the therapy sessions with Kaufmann tailor the game to the player was a great touch and also encourages multiple playthroughs as well as multiple endings. I loved the addition of in universe phone numbers for Harry to call I felt it allowed for fantastic world building and really lent a sense of authenticity to this games version of Silent Hill. I thought it felt gimmicky initially but I began to really like it. Having the phone woven into Gameplay for puzzle solving, maps etc. I did really enjoy the immersive elements of Shattered Memories. Which is a shame as I feel the concept had a lot of potential to be developed further. Every Otherworld environment blended together in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of these parts at all.Īt first I did enjoy the design of the Otherworld with the frozen over aesthetic however it quickly lost it's appeal when it never changed, progressed or had any new elements. The chase sequences are simply point A to point B running sequences with you having to QTE to remove enemies. Their high pitched scream sounds like edited audio of Cheryl or a child screaming which I'm not sure is intentional or not but I found it more annoying than anything. I found them more humorous than scary/unnerving. I wasn't a fan of the enemy design and their sound effects. The chase sequences were fun enough at first however when I discovered they never changed or introduced any new Gameplay elements I soon came to dread them and felt the detracted from the game overall. Which I'm not entirely against I just think the game felt like it was missing something without any type of combat whatsoever. I'd almost describe the game as a walking simulator. Gameplay wise I'm very conflicted as the game can feel extremely repetitive and lacks any sense of unease or tension due to the lack of enemies outside of chase sequences. I do think the story is the strongest aspect of this game along with it's immersion in the world. Overall I really enjoyed this game story wise I think Shattered Memories and Downpour have the best stories of the post Team Silent SH games. I knew I wouldn't be able to play the game having the controller emulate Wii inputs so I had to yield and play the inferior port. However, when I tried emulating the game via Dolphin on my Xbox I found out the game lacked any type of controller support it was Wii mote and Nunchuck only. I wanted to play the Wii Version due to the better visuals. For context I played the PS2 Version via PCSX2.
